Feb 2009: I've changed the scope of this site to be a collection of everything I can find about these plants. As far as I know I've asked everybody with pictures here for premission. If you find one of yours here you're unhappy about just write to me and I'll gladly remove it.
Taxonomy is based on Jan Bastmeijer's "Crypt's Pages": xs4all site old nl herbarium site (no idea how long this will work for). I've also begun to mirror Jan's work here "just in case" which is an idea we had almost a decade ago. I'm finally getting around to it. Follow the "Cryptocoryne" link to get to the old Herbarium pages, some of which I've marked up to make them a but more readable by layout and/or conversion from *.doc format to proper HTML.
- Richard Sexton
Cryptpcorynes are popular aquarium plants, known in the aquarium hobby since the early 20th century. They are also studied by people who do not keep aquariums who typically grow them emersed as part of an general interest in Aroids. Other Aroids are Spathiphyllum ("peace lily") and Anthurium. I like (and have) these plants too, but there are a few of us that believe plants of the genus Cryptocoryne are the elegant kings of the Aroid family. Certainly these are my favorite plants of all time.
All plants are indexed by the first letter of the species name. The many natural and man made hybrids are indexed by the first letter of the species name listed first in the cross. The codes were tabulated by Richard Sexton around 1998.
The column on the left is a link to Jan Bestmneijer's Crypts Pages while the column on the right points to local resources.
